Graduate Feature: Emma Sumner

Emma Sumner is currently a 4th year OBGYN resident at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS with research interests in Global Health. She has completed projects in wheelchair donation evaluation in Haiti, and obstetric simulation in Ghana. Currently, she participates in and coordinates a Well Woman clinic for refugee women in Halifax and sits on the Global Health and Advocacy Committee at the IWK Health Center.

Emma felt that using what she learned from the GCGSC certified program will help her better advocate for equitable surgical care in locally vulnerable patient populations that she works with, and to further strengthen her department’s collaborative and sustainable relationships with her Ghanaian colleagues. The GCGSC has provided her an excellent foundation in ethical and practical humanitarian service that she hopes to apply in her future career as an attending OBGYN.
